Misconceptions about quant finance?

m

math_maniac527d ago Careers

I've been interested in quantitative finance for around a year, however I'm finding it quite difficult to fully understand the industry from the outside. To those with industry experience, what are some misconceptions about quantitative finance that you've seen?

A lot of people seem fixated on the mathematics, statistics, programming etc that quants utilise, but completely neglect the social aspect. As with most jobs, you need to be able to communicate effectively, and have soft skills. Those who have both technical and social skills are typically the ones who break into the industry.

Quants, especially traders, generally do not work huge hours. They need their rest to stay focused, so they can't be glued to a screen for 13 hours a day.

Not from personal experience, but my friend who interned at 2sigma said that nepotism is basically non-existent
