How effective are connections in quant finance

Looking to break into a tier 1-2 quant trading in the next few years. Will gathering plenty of connections and getting to know people/maybe getting a referral help in this industry? I know not nearly to the extent as IB or consulting, but will it be beneficial for me to spend a lot of time connecting with quants?
