The short answer
Optiver Career Kickstarter is a five day experience for students approaching graduation and recent graduates who want to enter quantitative trading, research or software engineering. Participants learn from Optiver's education teams, work through practical challenges and receive feedback throughout the programme.
Amsterdam and Sydney offer different tracks and eligibility rules. Strong participants can be considered for a graduate job offer, but attendance does not guarantee employment.
What is Optiver Career Kickstarter?
Career Kickstarter is an intensive introduction to the work Optiver does as a market maker, with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills needed for a graduate role. Over five days, you move between instruction, applied problems, collaboration and feedback, rather than simply watching employees at work.
Market makers continuously offer to buy and sell financial instruments. Traders decide how to price risk, researchers test ideas against data, and engineers build the infrastructure that supports those decisions. Career Kickstarter lets you experience one of these areas in a structured setting with Optiver's own education team.
Format
Five days in an Optiver office, combining teaching, practical exercises and opportunities to meet employees.
Typical applicant
A student nearing graduation or a recent graduate who meets the location and track requirements.
Possible next step
Consideration for a graduate position in the relevant discipline based on your performance and fit.
If you are earlier in university and want to explore the industry before seeking graduate employment, Optiver FutureFocus is the more relevant student programme. Career Kickstarter is oriented towards people closer to starting their careers.
Programme tracks and locations
Choose the track based on the job you want to explore, not merely the office you would prefer to visit. Trading, Research and Technology develop different skills, and the available streams are not identical across locations.
| Office | Programme track | Main activities | Career direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | Trading | Options theory, pricing decisions, trading games and risk judgement | Graduate Trader |
| Amsterdam | Tech | Coding workshops, system design and a collaborative engineering project | Graduate Software Engineer |
| Amsterdam | Women in Tech | Technical workshops, engineering collaboration and women led career panels | Graduate Software Engineer |
| Sydney | Trading | Market making, options concepts, trading simulations and decision making | Graduate trading pathway |
| Sydney | Research | Financial data analysis, trading signals, modelling and algorithm experiments | Graduate research pathway |
| Sydney | Technology | Programming, trading systems, latency and practical engineering challenges | Graduate software pathway |
The Amsterdam applications currently cover Trading, Tech and Women in Tech. Sydney has separate Trading, Research and Technology streams. Use the matching official programme hub or Optiver vacancies to enter the right recruitment process.
How to choose the right stream
Choose Trading if you enjoy mental arithmetic, uncertainty, competitive decisions and weighing reward against risk. Choose Research if you prefer working with probability, programming, statistics and experimental data. Choose Technology if you want to write reliable software and understand how performance constraints shape a system.
Women in Tech is a separate Amsterdam programme for female identifying engineering applicants, with its own eligibility and selection steps. It leads towards the same broad software engineering career as the general Tech stream, while incorporating dedicated panels and networking.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility is attached to the actual office and programme vacancy. Graduation dates, study location, work availability and programming expectations can change your answer even when two opportunities share the Career Kickstarter name.
Amsterdam Trading
The current Trading intake accepts BSc or MSc students graduating from a European university between May 2025 and May 2028. Applicants should be based in Europe, including the Netherlands or the UK, and come from a STEM or Econometrics background.
You need the travel authorisation required to attend in Amsterdam and strong English communication, numerical reasoning and problem solving. Previous trading experience and programming are not compulsory for this stream.
Amsterdam Tech
The current Tech intake is for BSc, MSc or PhD students and graduates in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related subjects, with graduation between May 2025 and February 2028. Your university must be in the EU, EEA or UK, and you must be available to begin full time software engineering work by March 2028.
Expect to demonstrate proficiency in C++, Python or Java and understanding of algorithms, memory, concurrency, computer architecture, operating systems and databases. You must also have the necessary authorisation to attend in person; a finance background is not a prerequisite.
Amsterdam Women in Tech
Women in Tech is designed for female identifying applicants studying or having graduated in a technical degree from the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland. Its current graduation window is April 2025 to February 2028, and applicants need programming proficiency and availability to start full time work by February 2028.
As with the general Tech track, admission depends on your engineering preparation and ability to attend the Amsterdam programme, rather than existing knowledge of financial markets.
Sydney Trading, Research and Technology
Sydney Career Kickstarter is aimed at final year university students and graduates with Australian working rights. The upcoming Sydney intake targets students graduating in 2027 or earlier, and the available streams are Trading, Research and Technology.
Trading favours strong quantitative reasoning, Research favours mathematics, statistics and programming, and Technology favours software or engineering experience. Optiver's Sydney campus guidance is specifically for candidates in Australia and New Zealand, so check the work rights and graduation conditions on your chosen vacancy before applying.
Application deadlines and programme dates
The current openings below have their own deadlines and attendance dates. The Amsterdam Trading assessment deadline is especially important because it falls on the same calendar day as the application deadline.
| Programme | Attendance | Application deadline | Apply or check details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam Trading | 1 to 5 March or 8 to 12 March 2027 | 6 December 2026 at 17:00 CET | Trading vacancy |
| Amsterdam Women in Tech | 12 to 16 April 2027 | 10 January 2027 at 23:59 | Women in Tech vacancy |
| Amsterdam Tech | 10 to 14 May 2027 | 7 February 2027 at 17:00 CET | Tech vacancy |
| Sydney Trading, Research and Technology | Intake starts 22 March 2027 | 22 January 2027 in current graduate listings | Optiver jobs and Sydney intake listings |
For Amsterdam Trading, submit the application by 17:00 CET on 6 December 2026 and complete the online assessments by 23:59 CET that same day. Leave enough time to receive the invitation and finish the assessment before the later cutoff.
Sydney graduate listings give 14 December 2026 as the opening date for the March intake. Because openings change, use the live vacancy for your final submission and eligibility check, and follow the Career Kickstarter programme page to find future cohorts.
How to apply to Career Kickstarter
Apply through the relevant Optiver role listing rather than treating Career Kickstarter as one global application form. Pick the office and stream first, then make sure your degree, graduation date, availability and travel permission satisfy that vacancy.
- Choose a vacancy. Compare its location, graduation window, degree requirements, working rights and programme dates with your own circumstances.
- Prepare your application. Use a clear CV that highlights relevant coursework, projects, competitions, research or engineering work, and complete the information required by the online form.
- Complete the selection stages. Watch for an assessment invitation and schedule the interview stages specified for your stream.
- Confirm attendance. If accepted, arrange any required travel documents and follow the organiser's directions for transport, accommodation and the programme week.
A strong application explains relevant ability through concrete work. For Trading, that might be a probability project or competition involving decisions under uncertainty; for Research, a careful data study; for Technology, a substantial program with tests, performance measurements and clear design choices.
What does the selection process involve?
The current Amsterdam programmes have explicitly different selection sequences. Focus on the sequence for the vacancy you applied to rather than practising for every round found in a general Optiver interview guide.
| Stream | Selection steps | Best preparation focus |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam Trading | Online assessment, then technical interview for progressing applicants | Numerical reasoning, probability, explaining decisions under uncertainty |
| Amsterdam Tech | Online assessment, then technical interview for progressing applicants | Coding fundamentals, algorithms, testing, systems and project discussions |
| Amsterdam Women in Tech | Online assessment, behavioural interview and technical interview | Engineering problem solving, explaining projects and reflecting on teamwork |
| Sydney Career Kickstarter | Online assessment and recruitment conversation as required for the stream | Relevant technical foundations and a clear explanation of your motivation |
Online assessments
Prepare for the skills of your chosen stream. Trading applicants should be comfortable with quick arithmetic, probability, expected value and logical patterns; engineering applicants should practise implementing correct code and reasoning about how programs behave.
Use the exact assessment instructions in your invitation for permitted tools, timing and the actual tasks. An older Optiver assessment name, such as 80 in 8 or NumberLogic, is not proof that it will appear in your Career Kickstarter application.
Technical and behavioural conversations
For Trading, practise explaining how you reached a numerical answer, how you would act when information changes, and how you manage risk. For Tech, be ready to write or analyse code, discuss algorithms and describe the design decisions behind one project you understand thoroughly.
When a behavioural interview is part of selection, prepare examples that show curiosity, collaboration, learning from criticism and clear communication. A concise explanation of why you chose your stream is more persuasive than a generic statement about being interested in finance.
Optiver's current Amsterdam vacancies apply an eight month reapplication restriction to applicants who have completed an assessment or interview for a related internship, graduate role or programme at any Optiver location. Check this restriction before submitting another application.
What happens during the five days?
The week combines instruction with practical challenges, feedback and time alongside Optiver employees. The subject matter changes by stream, but every track rewards the ability to learn quickly, work with others and communicate your reasoning.
Trading: pricing, games and market judgement
Trading participants learn options concepts and practise making decisions when prices, probabilities and risk are changing. Interactive trading games and open outcry exercises develop the habit of quoting a price, updating it when new information arrives and understanding what can go wrong.
Amsterdam Trading also offers mentorship from its Trading Education Team and exposure to the trading floor when market conditions permit. Arrive ready to explain your assumptions instead of relying on a memorised answer.
Research: data, models and testable ideas
The Sydney Research stream introduces how quantitative researchers turn noisy market information into hypotheses that can be tested. Expect work involving financial datasets, statistics, mathematical models and the design or evaluation of trading algorithms.
Useful habits include checking data quality, separating information available at decision time from future information and asking whether an apparent result survives different conditions. An attractive backtest matters much less when it is based on an invalid assumption.
Technology: code, systems and engineering tradeoffs
The Tech experience covers coding, system design and collaborative development on problems shaped by trading infrastructure. Participants explore how orders are processed, how components communicate and why correctness, latency and reliability matter in an electronic exchange.
The current Amsterdam Tech programme also includes practical use of AI development tools, with responsibility for understanding and testing the final result. Women in Tech adds technical lectures, panels with women engineers and targeted networking alongside engineering workshops.
Feedback, networking and the office experience
Mentors challenge your decisions and help you improve while you work. Shared meals, conversations with employees and office activities let you assess whether the work and culture suit you, as well as giving the team an opportunity to see how you think.
Travel, programme costs and graduate offers
Career Kickstarter is presented as an expenses covered experience, including travel and hotel accommodation for the Amsterdam programmes. Sydney streams cover travel and accommodation for participants who live outside Sydney; check the instructions for your specific invitation before booking.
The programme itself should not be confused with a paid graduate job or internship salary. The current Sydney programme listings classify attendance as unpaid, while the main benefit is access to teaching, real problems, professional contacts and possible graduate recruitment.
Can it lead directly to a job?
Yes. Exceptional performance can lead to a direct Graduate Trader or Graduate Software Engineer offer in Amsterdam, with the target role depending on your programme. Sydney participants may be considered for a subsequent graduate intake in the relevant Trading, Research or Technology discipline.
An offer is conditional on the firm's assessment and the relevant employment requirements. Treat the week as a meaningful recruitment opportunity while making sure you also gain valuable experience if an offer does not follow.
What to arrange before attending
- Confirm your attendance dates and whether any university classes or examinations conflict.
- Check passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements for the programme office.
- Follow the booking instructions for flights and accommodation instead of assuming you should purchase everything yourself.
- Ask your coordinator about accessibility adjustments, dietary requirements and any equipment you need for workshops.
How to prepare a competitive application
Start by proving that you can do the underlying work. A compact CV with one strong project and a clear explanation of its outcome is more useful than a long list of unrelated certifications.
- Build the right evidence. Trading applicants should highlight numerical reasoning, probability or decision projects. Research applicants should show a tested model or data analysis, and Technology applicants should show code they have built, debugged and improved.
- Explain one project deeply. Be able to describe the problem, your approach, an error you discovered, how you checked the final result and what you would change next time.
- Train for your track. Practise arithmetic and expected value for Trading, statistical validation for Research, and algorithms plus computer systems for Technology.
- Prepare a collaboration example. Describe a time you revised an idea after feedback, disagreed constructively or helped a team reach a better solution.
- Check your application calendar. Verify the deadline time zone, graduation window and any previous Optiver assessment before submitting.
For an EverythingQuant practice routine, begin with 20 minutes of focused skill work a day and a short review of mistakes. Spend more time understanding why an answer is correct than trying to memorise the fastest solution to every possible question.
Three exercises to try before the programme
These are original EverythingQuant practice exercises designed around the skills used in the three tracks. They are illustrative learning tasks, not Optiver assessment questions or assignments from the programme.
Trading: revise a fair price when information changes
A contract pays $12 if an event occurs and nothing otherwise. You initially estimate a 25% event probability, but a new signal raises it to one third. What is the updated fair price, and how should your quote change?
Show the reasoning
The initial expected payout is 12 × 0.25 = $3. With the updated probability, the expected payout becomes 12 × (1/3) = $4.
A quote centred on the old estimate is now too low. Move your estimate towards $4, then consider a spread, exposure limits and how much confidence you have in the new signal before trading.
Research: distinguish a gross signal from a useful strategy
A toy trading strategy makes 400 trades with an average gross gain of six cents per trade. Estimated execution costs are four cents per trade. How much net profit does that imply, and what would you investigate before treating the strategy as reliable?
Show the reasoning
The estimated net gain is $0.06 − $0.04 = $0.02 per trade, or 400 × $0.02 = $8 across the sample. The small edge is vulnerable to underestimated costs and changes in market conditions.
Next, test on later data that was not used to develop the strategy. Check whether performance depends on a few unusual trades, whether the model uses information unavailable at decision time and whether a slightly higher cost assumption removes the profit.
Technology: maintain correct order state
A simplified exchange receives three events for the same order: add order A with quantity 5, fill quantity 2, then cancel the remaining quantity. What state should remain, and what edge cases would you test?
Show the reasoning
The fill reduces the open quantity from 5 to 3. The cancellation removes the remaining 3, so there should be no active quantity for order A.
Test repeated cancellations, fills larger than the remaining quantity, duplicate order identifiers and messages received in an unexpected order. Explain how your implementation preserves consistent state even when input is malformed.
Career Kickstarter FAQs
Is Career Kickstarter an internship?
No. It is a five day educational and recruiting programme with practical work and mentoring, rather than an extended internship placement. Successful participants can be considered for graduate employment separately.
Do I need to know finance before applying?
No prior finance or trading experience is required for the current Amsterdam Trading or engineering streams. You still need the numerical or technical foundations appropriate to your chosen track.
Does every stream use the same online assessment?
No single assessment format should be assumed across Trading, Research and Technology. Prepare for the skills of your stream and follow the specific assessment invitation you receive.
Can I apply to more than one stream?
Choose the stream that best matches your intended role and review its application rules before sending another submission. Optiver's global reapplication restriction can affect eligibility after an assessment or interview, so applying speculatively to multiple offices is a poor strategy.
Can students outside Europe apply to Amsterdam?
The current Amsterdam vacancies require qualifying European university study and appropriate travel permission, with slightly different geographic rules for Trading, Tech and Women in Tech. Check the vacancy requirements against your university and circumstances before applying.
Can I attend Sydney if I do not live there?
Yes, eligible applicants from outside Sydney can attend, and the Sydney programme covers travel and accommodation for those participants. Eligibility still includes the relevant Australian work rights and graduation conditions.
Will everyone receive an offer at the end?
No. The programme provides an opportunity to demonstrate your ability and be considered for a relevant graduate role. An offer is based on performance, fit and the employer's requirements, not attendance alone.
Should I choose FutureFocus instead?
FutureFocus is the better fit for students earlier in their degrees who want to explore trading and technology before graduate recruitment. Career Kickstarter is intended for students closer to graduation and eligible graduates who are ready to be considered for a full time role.
