The short answer
Five Rings Quantitative Trader applicants usually begin with a rapid fire HackerRank maths assessment, followed by live estimation, probability and game theory interviews. The typical OA length is 17 questions in 17 minutes or 15 questions in about 20 minutes.
Quantitative Research candidates undergo a longer math and statistics test. Software Developer interviews focus on coding, algorithms and engineering fundamentals.
How the Five Rings interview process works
The simplest way to prepare is to start with the role you applied for. Five Rings is a proprietary trading firm with three principal technical tracks: Quantitative Trading, Quantitative Research and Software Development. They work closely together, but they are assessed for different strengths.
For trading applicants, the common path is an online maths test, an estimation-heavy first conversation and several longer technical interviews covering probability and strategic games. Research follows a similar progression, however software candidates meet developers for programming-focused rounds.
- Application review. Recruiters consider your academic, mathematical, research or software background against the particular role.
- Early assessment. Trading applicants take a fast, maths-focused online test, often on HackerRank; research candidates also encounter statistics and calculus. Developer assessments focus more on algorithms and programming.
- Live technical interviews. Trading first rounds have included 10 oral estimation questions at 30 seconds each, followed by longer probability discussions. Research candidates report 45–60-minute technical calls; developers solve and explain coding problems.
- Further conversations or final interviews. One trading candidate described three or four virtual maths rounds followed by meetings with the head of trading and a founder. Other applicants report shorter paths, with later rounds probing the same skills more deeply.
The key change between stages is pace. In the OA, you have around a minute to recognise a mathematical shortcut and enter an answer. In live interviews, you may spend most of a call developing one probability argument, checking assumptions and responding to follow-up questions.
Applications and Five Rings internships
Five Rings recruits students, recent graduates and experienced professionals. Its current 2027 graduate Quantitative Trader posting describes working with senior traders, researchers and developers to improve live trading strategies. It asks for strong quantitative ability, curiosity and attention to detail. You do not need to arrive knowing a particular trading product to make a compelling application.
For students, the 2027 summer Trading internship is a nine-week programme in New York, with projects, classroom learning and mock trading. Its posting explicitly welcomes applicants studying outside the United States. The 2027 Quantitative Research internship is advertised for current PhD students, and the Software Developer internship has its own programming requirements. Read the eligibility section for your specific opening.
A focused application makes your technical work easy to assess. If you built a model, explain the problem, your contribution and how you tested it. If you wrote software, identify the language, the constraints and what you improved. Five Rings also advises applicants to prioritise their strongest-fit position, even though multiple applications are possible for some programmes.
The Five Rings online assessment (OA)
The Five Rings trading OA is a rapid-fire maths test. Topics include mental arithmetic, logarithmic estimates, probability, combinatorics, geometry and short calculus-style approximations. Research OAs place additional weight on statistics and calculus, including regression and integration.
Does Five Rings use HackerRank?
Yes. Trading and research applicants take their math assessment on HackerRank. The trading test involves timed maths questions rather than algorithmic coding. One August 2026 applicant specifically warned candidates to use the platform's "Save and Proceed" control after each answer, so check how answers are submitted before you start.
How long is the OA?
For trading interns, a useful benchmark is 15–17 questions in roughly 17–20 minutes. A Summer 2027 applicant reported a 17-minute HackerRank; another candidate described 17 questions in 17 minutes, while a 2025 intern reported 15 in about 20 minutes. Quantitative Research uses a different pace: an August 2026 applicant described about 19 questions, with 2–3 minutes each.
What should you be able to solve?
Try math approximation tactics such as estimating log₂(100!), approximating 1.01^100 and estimating the arc length of sin(x) from 0 to π. Practise logarithm and exponential shortcuts, sensible bounds, fractions, counting and conditional probability. Research applicants should add distributions, regression, hypothesis testing and integrals over geometric regions.
A useful timed drill: For trading, try 17 mixed estimation and probability questions in 17 minutes, then 10 spoken estimates at 30 seconds each. For research, try 19 maths-and-statistics questions at two to three minutes apiece. Review which shortcut or approximation would have saved the most time.
EverythingQuant already has a Five Rings preparation question bank, selected for probability, statistics, estimation and related skills. These are practice questions, not a collection of authenticated past assessments.
First technical interviews and later rounds
After the OA, trading interviews often begin with oral estimates. A 2024 intern described a first call with 10 estimation questions at 30 seconds each; later rounds focused on probability and game theory. One publicly reported problem is a two-card poker game with an ace and queen, asking for raising and bluffing probabilities when the opponent knows your strategy. Expect follow-ups about why your answer changes as information changes.
For example, suppose a game pays $10 if a six appears on one roll of a fair die. The fair value before costs is $10 / 6, or about $1.67. If you were quoting a price to trade that claim, you would also want to consider uncertainty, the information available to the other side and the risk of carrying the position. Those follow-ups turn a probability calculation into a trading conversation.
Research interviews can move from the fast OA to a 45–60-minute call covering probability, statistics and follow-ups about previous work. Reported questions include finding the distribution or expectation of the maximum of two normal random variables and deciding when to stop a probabilistic game. For developers, Five Rings described its interviews as developer-led in a 2024 Columbia University workshop: expect to discuss past projects alongside algorithms, coding and testing.
For trading, a 2025 candidate described three or four virtual maths interviews before conversations with senior trading leadership; another intern reported four interviews in total. Prepare to discuss conditional probability, stochastic processes, game theory and the assumptions behind your strategy as the interviewer adds new conditions.
What changes between trading, research and software roles?
The firm's job descriptions are a more reliable way to choose your preparation topics than a generic list of quant interview questions. Select the track closest to your application.
Quantitative Trader: speed, probability and decisions
Five Rings traders manage strategies in live markets, adjusting models and responding to new information. That explains why quick calculations are only part of the preparation. You should be able to connect probability to a decision about risk, reward or a quoted price.
Prioritise logarithmic and exponential approximations, conditional probability, counting, expected value and short strategic games. For live rounds, practise setting a fair price, updating it after a trade and explaining when a betting strategy should mix between two actions. You can build this skill with the EverythingQuant market-making games.
Quantitative Researcher: mathematics, statistics and evidence
Five Rings researchers develop models and trading strategies with traders and software teams. Its role descriptions stress mathematical ability and communication, while the 2027 summer research posting specifically seeks PhD candidates with basic programming experience. The level of mathematical depth can therefore be higher than that of a general trading internship.
Work through order statistics (such as the maximum of two random variables), distributions, conditional expectation, regression, hypothesis testing and integrals over bounded regions. Explain a research project from question to validation: the assumptions you made, how you tested them and what would change your conclusion. Use Python or R to check models numerically, matching the firm's published research tooling.
Software Developer: algorithms and dependable systems
Five Rings builds trading systems in C++ on Linux. Its 2027 Software Developer internship posting states that Python proficiency is required and C/C++ and Linux experience are preferred. Prepare for coding and technical discussion even if you also enjoy mathematical puzzles.
Practise arrays, hash maps, sliding windows, sorting, algorithmic complexity, edge cases and testing. An earlier developer candidate described medium-difficulty algorithm rounds with some system design; a 2024 LINK applicant reported a Coderbyte interview discussing assessment results. Start with the EverythingQuant programming questions and DSA in Python course, then review C++, memory and performance for lower-level work.
Four practice interview questions, with solutions
These four questions are original EverythingQuant exercises. They practise the reasoning useful for Five Rings applicants and are not claimed to be questions asked by the firm. Try to answer each before opening the solution.
1. Estimation: weekday coffee sales
Estimate the number of takeaway coffees sold on a weekday in a hypothetical city of 1.2 million people. State your assumptions and give a sensible range.
Show the estimation
Start with a compact model: population × adult share × share who buy takeaway coffee × average weekday coffees per buyer. Suppose 75% are adults, 60% of adults purchase takeaway coffee at least occasionally, and this group averages 0.4 purchases per weekday.
1,200,000 × 0.75 × 0.60 × 0.40 = 216,000 coffees per weekday. If the last assumption were 0.3 to 0.5 instead, the estimate would range from 162,000 to 270,000. None of these inputs is a measured city statistic; the interview skill is choosing defensible assumptions and identifying the one that matters most.
2. Expected value: should you roll again?
You roll a fair six-sided die and receive the result in pounds. After seeing your first roll, you may keep it or pay £1 to roll a second time, which you must then accept. When should you reroll, and what is the expected payoff under the best strategy?
Show the expected-value solution
A fresh roll is worth an average of 3.5. After paying the £1 reroll fee, its expected net value is 2.5. Reroll a first result of 1 or 2; keep 3, 4, 5 or 6.
The expected optimal payoff is (2.5 + 2.5 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6) / 6 = 23/6 ≈ £3.83. Keeping the first roll every time would yield £3.50 on average, so the option to reroll is worth about 33 pence. The point of the problem is the comparison between a guaranteed payoff and the value of another uncertain choice.
3. Statistics: the larger of two measurements
Two independent random numbers, X and Y, are uniform on the interval from 0 to 1. What is the expected value of the larger number?
Show the statistics solution
Let M be the larger of X and Y. For any t between 0 and 1, M is at most t only when both measurements are at most t. Independence gives P(M ≤ t) = t².
For a nonnegative random variable, its expectation is the area under the probability that it exceeds each possible threshold. Here, E[M] = ∫₀¹ (1 − t²) dt = 2/3. The answer is greater than 1/2, as it should be: choosing the larger of two independent observations pushes the average upwards.
4. Coding: peak volume in a moving window
You receive a list of (timestamp, quantity) trades in nondecreasing timestamp order. Quantities are nonnegative. For a positive window length W, find the largest total quantity in any window (t − W, t] ending at an observed timestamp t.
Show the Python solution
Maintain a running sum of the trades in the current window. As time advances, remove trades whose timestamps lie exactly on or before the excluded left boundary.
def peak_volume(trades, window_seconds):
if window_seconds <= 0:
raise ValueError("window_seconds must be positive")
left = 0
current = 0
best = 0
for right, (timestamp, quantity) in enumerate(trades):
current += quantity
while left <= right and trades[left][0] <= timestamp - window_seconds:
current -= trades[left][1]
left += 1
best = max(best, current)
return best
For [(1, 3), (2, 5), (6, 4), (7, 2)] with W = 5, the answer is 9. At t = 6, the trade at time 1 has expired, while the trades at times 2 and 6 contribute 5 + 4.
Each trade enters and leaves the window at most once. The algorithm takes O(n) time and O(1) extra space, beyond its input. Test empty lists, identical timestamps, long gaps and a trade exactly on the boundary. It assumes the input is already sorted, as stated in the question.
How difficult are Five Rings interviews?
The main difficulty in the trading OA is recognising a shortcut under the clock. Seventeen questions in 17 minutes leaves about a minute each, yet reported problems include approximating log₂(100!) and the arc length of sin(x). Research applicants describe more calculus and statistics, often at just two or three minutes per question. Both formats demand quick method selection rather than lengthy written solutions.
Later rounds are difficult in a different way: a trader may spend much of a conversation on one strategic probability game, while a researcher may face repeated follow-ups on a statistical argument. Practise one-minute numerical estimates alongside 45–60-minute sessions solving a few problems aloud. For developers, measure progress through correctly tested implementations, especially boundary cases.
How to prepare for a Five Rings interview
Use the first few days to close basic gaps and the remaining time to practise under conditions closer to the interview. You will learn more by correcting ten misunderstood problems than by racing through fifty and never checking the solutions.
- Choose your track. For trading, train one-minute maths problems and 30-second oral estimates. For research, include statistics, calculus and longer derivations. For software, prioritise coding, algorithms and careful testing.
- Build accuracy before speed. Learn the approximation or proof first, then redo it a day later. Work up to a 17-question, 17-minute trading set or a research set with two to three minutes per question.
- Practise live explanations. Talk through a probability game and respond when the rules change. For code, explain complexity and test a boundary case before saying you're finished.
- Review mistakes deliberately. Classify each miss as arithmetic, method selection, modelling assumption or implementation error. Spend your next practice session on the categories that repeat.
If your gaps are more fundamental, use Probability for Quants for a structured foundation. Developers can work through programming interview exercises. For applied trading intuition, try market-making practice. Choose one resource based on your next round rather than opening everything at once.
Five Rings interview FAQs
Is the Five Rings OA automatically sent to everyone?
No. Applicants report receiving the OA invitation after screening, sometimes on the same day and sometimes around a week after applying. In a July 2026 thread, two students applied on the same day but only one had received an invitation a week later.
What is the passing score for the Five Rings online assessment?
Five Rings has not published a passing mark for the trading or research OA. For preparation, focus on getting a high proportion correct at the reported pace rather than aiming at a rumoured percentage.
Does the Five Rings trading OA require coding?
The reported Quantitative Trader HackerRank is a maths test without coding. Software Developer candidates should prepare for programming and algorithm questions; research roles can involve coding discussion in later interviews.
Can I apply for a Five Rings internship from outside the US?
Yes. The Summer 2027 Quantitative Trader internship explicitly welcomes students studying outside the United States. Check the application form's work-authorisation and visa questions when applying.
Do I need finance experience or a particular degree?
Its 2027 Quantitative Trader postings focus on quantitative ability rather than naming a mandatory finance degree. Five Rings also told students at a 2024 software workshop that a finance background was not required for its generalist developer recruitment. Research is different: the currently advertised 2027 research internship requires applicants to be pursuing a PhD in a relevant subject.
What is the Five Rings winternship or externship?
Five Rings runs a January externship, often called a winternship, separate from its nine-week summer internship. Applicants have reported timed estimation and probability interviews for this shorter programme. Check its own recruitment details when applying.
How long does it take to hear back after the OA?
A September 2026 research applicant reported waiting more than a month after the OA for a technical interview. If you have heard nothing for one to two weeks, a brief follow-up to your recruiter is reasonable.
Is Five Rings a hedge fund?
Five Rings describes itself as a proprietary trading firm. Its traders, researchers and developers collaborate on in-house trading strategies. That distinction is useful when choosing interview preparation: trading decisions, mathematical reasoning and production software matter more here than a generic hedge-fund stock-pitch syllabus.
