Discover Citadel is a selective programme that typically runs for two days in person, introducing students early in university to Citadel and Citadel Securities. The programme combines conversations with employees, exposure to research, trading and engineering careers, collaborative challenges and mock interviews.
Apply through the event for your region with an accurate academic record, a resume showing your strongest work and links to substantial projects. The programme is a learning and networking event, with any future internship application handled separately.
What is Discover Citadel?
Discover Citadel brings students into the worlds of two different firms. Citadel manages investment strategies, while Citadel Securities provides liquidity as a global market maker.
The combined event lets you meet people across both businesses before choosing which kind of work interests you most. It is designed for exploration and exposure rather than a summer internship or an employment contract.
Citadel
Explore how investors and researchers form hypotheses about markets, evaluate evidence and make decisions while managing risk.
Citadel Securities
Explore how traders, researchers and engineers work together to price instruments, manage trading risk and build market technology.
Start with the Discover Citadel programme page and its corresponding Citadel Securities page to see the shared event and available locations.
Who is eligible for Discover Citadel?
The main programme targets students in their first or second university year with strong academic performance. For the current announced intake, the general graduation window is December 2028 through June 2030, and the application requires a cumulative GPA on your resume.
You must also meet the specific residency, university location, age and degree rules for the event you select. All currently listed regional application forms require participants to be at least 18 years old.
| Application region | Who the regional form serves | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada | Eligible undergraduates studying in the United States, its territories or Canada | University location, graduation window and GPA |
| Europe | Eligible undergraduates residing in Europe | Residence and graduation window |
| Singapore | Eligible students residing in Singapore, including undergraduate, master's and PhD applicants | Residence and the stated graduation window |
| Hong Kong | Eligible undergraduates studying at universities in Hong Kong or mainland China | University location and graduation window |
| India | Eligible undergraduates attending an Indian Institute of Technology | Institution and graduation date, beginning December 2028 |
These are distinct local application routes, even when events share the same venue. For example, the Singapore form includes postgraduate students, while the main undergraduate programme overview does not describe that exception.
Choose a listing whose individual eligibility rules include your location or institution. The programme overview mentions Sydney, but the live list of event applications is the place to choose an available regional route.
When do applications open and close?
The next announced events have separate regional deadlines. The dates below apply to the events scheduled for 2027 and should be checked against the live event listings before you submit.
| Event | Application deadline | Selection notification |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 5 March 2027 | 12 March 2027 |
| London | 29 January 2027 | 5 February 2027 |
| Singapore | 29 January 2027 | 5 February 2027 |
| Hong Kong | 14 February 2027 | 26 February 2027 |
| India applicants attending in Hong Kong | 14 February 2027 | 26 February 2027 |
Build your application before the regional deadline rather than waiting for an invitation. Keep your university transcript details, correct graduation date and project links readily available.
How the application and selection work
Apply through the official regional form with your resume, cumulative GPA, education history and relevant links. Citadel assesses academic performance, qualifications and demonstrated interest in investment or trading, and can request an interview during selection.
-
Choose the correct regional form
Match your university or residence to the relevant event, then confirm your graduation date and eligibility. Use the official events page as your starting point.
-
Submit a concise, specific academic profile
Include your cumulative GPA, university, degree, anticipated graduation and your strongest technical, research or extracurricular achievements. Where requested, add a working link to a project, repository, paper or portfolio that you can explain from memory.
-
Make your career interests clear
The United States application asks for a preferred area such as quantitative research, software engineering, investment and trading, quantitative trading or openness to all roles. Choose the option that matches your work and curiosity rather than treating the event as three separate guaranteed tracks.
-
Prepare for a possible selection conversation
Be ready to explain one achievement, one difficult technical or analytical decision and why you want to explore these firms. An interview is a possible selection step under the United States programme terms, rather than an identical requirement for every applicant.
-
Respond to your invitation and organise attendance
Watch the contact address used on your application near the regional notification date. If selected, complete any requested eligibility documents and travel arrangements within the deadlines in your invitation.
What makes an application useful to review?
Show evidence of intellectual initiative, not a list of every course you have taken. A strong project entry tells the reader what you built or investigated, which decisions were yours and what result you measured.
For a data project, prepare to explain your dataset, baseline, evaluation method and one limitation. For an engineering project, know the main architecture, the hardest bug and how you tested the outcome.
The United States programme terms prohibit using generative AI tools to prepare applicant content. Write your resume entries and application answers yourself, check them for accuracy and follow the programme terms that apply to your submission.
What happens during the programme?
The programme introduces participants to working life at Citadel and Citadel Securities through conversations, interactive activities and time with employees. Its main attractions are exposure to the businesses, early career opportunities and a chance to practise thinking with other students.
Meet employees and leaders
Ask about the problems their team solves, how projects move from idea to implementation and what they look for in early career colleagues.
Explore different careers
Compare quantitative research, trading and engineering through actual employee perspectives instead of treating every quant role as interchangeable.
Try collaborative challenges
Work with other participants in team activities and intellectual competitions. Practise communicating assumptions and sharing decisions clearly.
Practise interview conversations
Use mock interviews to make your reasoning easier to follow and learn how to respond when a question has no immediate answer.
Arrive with two questions for each area you are curious about and one project you can explain without slides. During exercises, make sure the group agrees on a goal, a reasonable assumption and a way to check its answer.
Which career areas should you explore?
Discover Citadel exposes students to quantitative research, trading and software engineering, with investing as a distinctive part of Citadel's business. The sections below organise your preparation by interest; they are not separate admission exams or fixed programme tracks.
Investing and trading: decisions under uncertainty
Citadel investment teams assess opportunities and take positions, while Citadel Securities trading teams make markets and manage the risk of providing liquidity. Prepare to describe the difference between deciding an asset is attractive and quoting a price at which you will trade with another participant.
- Review: probability, expected value, basic market making and why risk matters when an average outcome looks favourable.
- Ask: What changes a trader's quote when inventory becomes too large?
- Demonstrate: one occasion when you made a decision with incomplete information and updated it after new evidence.
Quantitative research: testing an idea against data
Researchers use models and evidence to assess market questions and challenge assumptions. Prepare to describe how you formed a hypothesis, chose a baseline and checked that a result was not simply noise or a data error.
- Review: conditional probability, sampling variation, simple statistics and why untouched test data matters.
- Ask: What evidence makes a promising research result worth deploying?
- Demonstrate: a project where an initial result failed and how you found the cause.
Software engineering: reliable systems at scale
Engineers build tools and systems for research, markets and operations. Prepare one detailed explanation of code you wrote, how data moves through it and what happens when a user or service supplies an unexpected input.
- Review: dictionaries, arrays, testing, debugging, basic algorithm complexity and clear interfaces.
- Ask: How do teams test changes to systems where speed and reliability both matter?
- Demonstrate: a design tradeoff and how you verified the finished system behaved correctly.
Choose one primary interest to investigate deeply and a second to compare with it. That gives you stronger questions during conversations and helps you decide which internships to investigate later.
Three original exercises to prepare
These EverythingQuant practice exercises build the reasoning and communication skills useful in programme discussions and collaborative challenges. They are illustrative preparation tasks, not questions from Discover Citadel's application or event.
Exercise 1: Price a contract after new information
A contract pays 100 units if a particular event occurs and nothing otherwise. The event initially has a 30% probability, and a new positive signal appears 80% of the time when the event occurs and 20% of the time when it does not.
Calculate the probability of the event after the positive signal, then decide whether buying the contract at 59 units has positive expected value. EverythingQuant practice benchmark: explain your assumptions and arithmetic in four minutes.
Show the worked trading solution
The probability of the event and a positive signal is 0.30 × 0.80 = 0.24. The probability of a positive signal is 0.24 + (0.70 × 0.20) = 0.38.
Bayes' rule gives 0.24 / 0.38 = 12 / 19, about 63.16%. The contract's fair expected payoff is therefore about 63.16 units, making the expected gain from buying at 59 approximately 4.16 units before costs.
A positive expected gain does not eliminate the possibility of losing the entire 59 units paid. A good discussion covers the estimate, the downside and what would make you revise the probability.
Exercise 2: Decide whether a model has improved
A directional forecasting model makes 100 independent predictions on untouched data and gets 56 correct. A simple baseline is correct 50% of the time; decide how persuasive the improvement is.
EverythingQuant practice benchmark: make an initial judgement in three minutes, then identify one check that would make you more confident.
Show the worked research solution
Under a 50% success baseline, the expected number of correct predictions is 50. The standard deviation is the square root of 100 × 0.5 × 0.5, which equals 5.
The model's six additional correct predictions are only 6 / 5 = 1.2 standard deviations above the baseline. That is weak statistical evidence from this sample alone, so repeat the test on fresh data and inspect leakage, class balance and how many models were tried.
The important distinction is between observing a higher score and showing that the improvement is reliable. Describe your evaluation design before celebrating the result.
Exercise 3: Reconstruct positions from a trade stream
A program receives symbol and signed quantity pairs, with positive numbers adding inventory and negative numbers removing it. Write a function that returns the final nonzero position for each symbol after processing every event.
events = [
("BTC", 5),
("ETH", 2),
("BTC", -3),
("ETH", -2),
("SOL", -4),
]
# Expected: {"BTC": 2, "SOL": -4}
EverythingQuant practice benchmark: write and test the solution within eight minutes, including an empty stream and an exact cancellation.
Show the worked engineering solution
def net_positions(events):
positions = {}
for symbol, change in events:
positions[symbol] = positions.get(symbol, 0) + change
if positions[symbol] == 0:
del positions[symbol]
return positions
assert net_positions([]) == {}
assert net_positions([("A", 3), ("A", -3)]) == {}
assert net_positions(events) == {"BTC": 2, "SOL": -4}
Each event updates one dictionary entry, so the expected running time is O(n) for n events, with O(k) space for up to k active symbols. Removing a position when it returns to zero keeps the result compact.
In a conversation, explain how the design would change if events could be corrected, duplicated or delivered out of order. Those followups reveal more about engineering judgement than memorising syntax.
Travel, expenses and career outcomes
Discover Citadel provides selected participants with event support that depends on the application region. For the current United States event, benefits include economy airfare, airport transfers, a single occupancy hotel for two nights and selected meals.
The London event includes economy airfare and up to three hotel nights, while Singapore's event lists transport to the venue and meals during the programme day. The Hong Kong and India application pages list airfare, local transfers, meals and up to three hotel nights where applicable.
Read the applicable regional application details before booking travel. Participants can still be responsible for taxes, visas and expenses outside the listed benefits.
You gain direct exposure to recruiters and employees, practice discussing problems and a clearer idea of which roles to pursue. Participation itself is not an internship or a promise of an employment interview or offer.
A practical preparation plan
Spend your preparation time on application quality, your ability to explain one real achievement and enough technical foundations to participate confidently. This five session EverythingQuant plan is a study suggestion rather than an admission requirement.
- Session 1, 30 minutes: Check the correct regional form, graduation eligibility and application deadlines; gather your GPA, resume and project links.
- Session 2, 45 minutes: Choose two achievements and explain the problem, your contribution, one result and one limitation for each.
- Session 3, 40 minutes: Review the difference between Citadel and Citadel Securities; prepare three questions about the careers you want to compare.
- Session 4, 45 minutes: Complete one relevant original practice exercise above, then explain the result aloud without reading the solution.
- Session 5, 30 minutes: Rehearse a concise introduction and one project discussion, confirm every application field and submit through the matching official form.
If you are attending in person, bring questions that encourage specific stories. Ask an engineer about a reliability tradeoff, a researcher about a failed hypothesis or a trader about a risk decision rather than asking every person for generic career advice.

Are Discover Citadel and Discover Citadel Securities different events?
The two firms describe a combined programme introducing both businesses. Use the programme entry for your region and then explore each firm's roles during the event.
Is there a technical interview or online assessment to get in?
Selection starts with the application and academic information, and an interview can be requested under the programme terms. Prioritise a strong resume and the ability to explain your interests and projects rather than assuming the standard internship test sequence applies.
Can postgraduate students apply?
The Singapore application includes eligible master's and PhD students, while the main programme and several other regional forms target undergraduates. Match your degree and location to the eligibility on the exact form you plan to submit.
Does Discover Citadel offer an automatic internship interview?
Attendance offers experience with the businesses and access to employees and recruiters. Pursue internship openings through the appropriate recruiting application rather than relying on programme attendance as an automatic offer or interview.
What GPA do I need?
Include your actual cumulative GPA, because it is a required part of the application. Strengthen the rest of your profile with substantive achievements, clear ownership and projects that you can defend in conversation.
Can I apply to the event in another country?
Apply through the event whose residency and university location criteria fit you. The listed regional forms have distinct eligibility requirements, so a nearby venue alone does not establish eligibility.
