The Rise of Prediction Markets: A New Frontier for Quantitative Trading Talent
As forecasting markets scale in liquidity and sophistication, elite firms are positioning early to dominate this emerging quantitative edge.

For years, prediction markets sat on the fringe of quantitative finance. Such markets were often dismissed as political betting pools or novelty exchanges. That perception is rapidly changing.
Across several quantitative proprietary trading firms, a growing share of research and trading bandwidth is now being allocated to prediction contracts on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket. With humble beginnings as exploratory side projects inside quant shops, pricing prediction events are now dedictaed desks, complete with systematic models, liquidity mandates, and full-time traders.
What Are Prediction Markets?
A prediction market allows participants to trade contracts tied to real life outcomes. For example, a contract might ask, "Will the Fed cut rates before June?", or, "Will the republican nominee win the presidency?". Even events as comical as, "How many times will Taylor Swift be shown at the superbowl?" could be a real prediction market contract.
Each contract trades between $0 and $1, which represents it's implied probability. For example, a contract trading at $0.63 implies a 63% chance of the event occurring.
For institutional quants, these markets are just another stochastic asset class; one that is often fragmented, inefficient, and structually immature. And that is often where alpha can be identified.
Why Quant Firms Are Moving In
Major trading firms including DRW, Susquehanna International Group (SIG), Jump Trading, Flow Traders, and several specialist funds have either launched or expanded prediction market teams.
Job postings, such as "Prediction Markets Trader" and "Sports & Political Event Trader", have exploded within the past 12 months. Some firms are offering six-figure base salaries for graduates to build these desks.
But why now?
Prediction markets have recently exploded in volume. Monthly volumes that were under $100 million in early 2024 have surged into the multi-billion-dollar range by late 2025. Now, daily volumes reach in the hundreds of millions.
What Prediction Market Quants Do
This is a very unique role, which combines many attributes, such as sports trading, market making, and macro trends. Typical responsibilities include:
- Building probability models
- Detecting deviations from fair value
- Managing inventory risk in prediction contracts
- Cross-platform Arbitrage Detection
- Monitoring Market Making Algorithms
- Monitoring regulatory and political developments
Unlike traditional equities or futures, there are no earnings reports or balance sheets. The underlying variable is uncertainty itself. This makes the work highly interdisciplinary. Successful traders often combine:
- Strong probability and statistics intuition
- Coding ability (Python, C++, data pipelines)
- Market microstructure understanding
- Rapid information processing
- Comfort with ambiguous datasets
The Broader Landscape
Prediction markets are unlikely to replace traditional asset classes anytime soon. They remain small relative to equities, rates, or commodities.
But their growth trajectory is undeniable. Institutional players are increasing treating prediction markets as a hedging tool for event risk, a real-time macro sentiment gauge, a source of alternative data, and a potential standalone strategy.
As more professional liquidity providers enter, these markets will likely become more efficient, but also larger, deeper, and more embedded in financial infrastructure.
How to Become a Prediction Market Quant
If this space interests you, consider developing the following attributes:
- Probability theory and Bayesian thinking
- Strong statistical modelling skills
- Practical arbitrage detection across related instruments
- The ability to build and test automated trading simulations
And most importantly, think in expected value at all times. Prediction markets reward traders who understand probabilistic mispricing rather than narrative conviction.
EverythingQuant helps you build the theoretical foundations through our courses in core quant topics, interview questions in probability and brainteasers, and online assessment simulations used by popular firms.
Gaining early exposure to market inefficiencies is critical. Profitocracy can help you develop intuition around arbitrage, market taking, and identifying positive expected value opportunities in betting markets. This platform also allows you to build an additional income using math and statistics very early in your career.
